Oakland Local

Oakland Local Oakland Local is a nonpartisan, nonprofit media and capacity-building organization that promotes civic engagement and discourse on local issues that matter. We are both a go-to  media resource for diverse voices in the East Bay of California and a capacity-building tool to help low-income and under-served communities make their voices heard online through the hands-on media training we provide. We are particularly focused on serving Oakland’s low-income communities of color.

OL Academy

OL Academy Oakland Local Academy is the premier East Bay resource for learning how to use social media, market your business or organization online, and learn how to tell–and share–your own story.  We’re committed to offering affordable, high-quality training, mentoring and follow-up to Oakland-area residents, non-profit and community workers and business people.

Code for Oakland

Code for OaklandCode for Oakland was a 1 day mobile hackathon that brought together government officials, developers, designers, and interested community partners for a day devoted to looking at local datasets and developing mobile apps that serve the local community.

Curriculum of Change

Curriculum of ChangeWith the support of The California Endowment, Oakland Local has developed a media training module that can be used to train community members, non-profit staffers, local organizers, college interns, high school students and other interested parties how to tell their own stories online. We think learning how to tell—and share—these stories will increase activity, generate momentum and strengthen public participation, as well as deepening member engagement.

Likes & Tweets

Likes & TweetsLikes & Tweets is  a roadmap for journalists looking for ways to improve both their understanding and use of social media. This learning module, created for the J-Lab/Knight Community News Network, focuses on the principles of authenticity, transparency and crowd-sourced, real-time communication that make social media so strikingly different from traditional media.  It will also give you hands-on tools, tips and tactics that can make your daily use of Facebook, Twitter and other resources much more effective.
